4. Documentation

  • tests/e2e/README.md - Complete testing guide
  • E2E_TESTING_QUICKREF.md - Quick reference
  • run-e2e-tests.ps1 - Interactive test runner script

Quick Start

Step 1: Install Dependencies

pip install -r requirements-test.txt
playwright install

Step 2: Start Server

.\run.bat

Step 3: Run Tests

Option A: Use Interactive Script

.\run-e2e-tests.ps1

Option B: Run Directly

# All tests
pytest tests/e2e/

# Specific test file
pytest tests/e2e/test_dashboard.py

# With visible browser
$env:PLAYWRIGHT_HEADLESS="false"; pytest tests/e2e/

# Specific test
pytest tests/e2e/test_dashboard.py::test_dashboard_loads -v

Test Coverage

Page/Feature Tests Status
Dashboard 6 ✅ Ready
Printers 6 ✅ Ready
Jobs 7 ✅ Ready
Materials 7 ✅ Ready
API Integration 8 ✅ Ready
Examples 8 ✅ Ready
Total 42 Ready

Test Markers

Filter tests by functionality:

# E2E tests only
pytest -m e2e

# Tests requiring backend
pytest -m network

# German compliance tests
pytest -m german

# Exclude slow tests
pytest -m "e2e and not slow"

# WebSocket tests
pytest -m websocket

Key Features

✅ Page Object Model

Clean, maintainable test structure with reusable page objects.

✅ Multiple Browsers

Test on Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit:

pytest tests/e2e/ --browser chromium
pytest tests/e2e/ --browser firefox
pytest tests/e2e/ --browser webkit

✅ Screenshots & Videos

Automatic capture on failure: - Screenshots: test-reports/playwright/screenshots/ - Videos: test-reports/playwright/videos/ - Traces: test-reports/playwright/traces/

API Mocking

Test frontend without backend:

app_page.route("**/api/v1/printers", lambda route: route.fulfill(...))

✅ Real-time Monitoring

Monitor console messages and network requests during tests.

✅ Responsive Testing

Test different screen sizes automatically.

Example Test

import pytest
from playwright.sync_api import Page, expect
from tests.e2e.pages import DashboardPage

@pytest.mark.e2e
@pytest.mark.playwright
def test_dashboard_loads(app_page: Page, base_url: str):
    """Test that the dashboard page loads successfully"""
    dashboard = DashboardPage(app_page)
    dashboard.navigate(base_url)

    assert dashboard.is_loaded()
    expect(app_page).to_have_title("Printernizer")

Architecture Benefits

1. Maintainability

Page Object Model keeps selectors and logic centralized.

2. Reliability

Playwright's auto-waiting reduces flaky tests.

3. Speed

Tests run in parallel with pytest-xdist:

pytest tests/e2e/ -n auto

4. Debugging

Rich debugging tools: - Headed mode to see browser - Slow motion to watch actions - Screenshots and videos - Full execution traces

5. Integration

Works seamlessly with existing pytest infrastructure.

CI/CD Ready

Tests are ready for continuous integration:

- name: E2E Tests
  run: |
    pip install -r requirements-test.txt
    playwright install --with-deps chromium
    pytest tests/e2e/ --browser chromium
  env:
    PLAYWRIGHT_HEADLESS: true

  • Quick Reference: E2E_TESTING_QUICKREF.md
  • Example Tests: tests/e2e/test_examples.py
  • Playwright Docs: https://playwright.dev/python/

Notes

  • Tests use the Page Object Model pattern for maintainability
  • All tests are marked with @pytest.mark.e2e and @pytest.mark.playwright
  • Tests requiring backend are marked with @pytest.mark.network
  • German compliance tests are marked with @pytest.mark.german
  • The lint errors about "playwright.sync_api" are expected until you install Playwright

Support

If you encounter issues:

  1. Check the troubleshooting section in tests/e2e/README.md
  2. Verify server is running at http://localhost:8000
  3. Ensure Playwright browsers are installed: playwright install
  4. Try running in headed mode to see what's happening

Ready to test! Run .\run-e2e-tests.ps1 to get started. 🚀
